Keeping Your Kids Safe on Vacation

Family vacations are great. It’s fun to get away from the chaos of everyday life and relax with your family! However, traveling with young children can be nerve wracking, especially if your family is traveling to a different country. While international travel is a great experience for everybody, there are also many precautions that parents should take when traveling with young kids.

Be Vigilant!

When traveling, it’s important to recognize that you are in an environment that is unfamiliar to you and your family. You must be extra careful when making your way around an area that you are not native to. Though accidents and emergencies are not common, they do happen occasionally and it is definitely better to be prepared than to be caught off guard!rnTraveling can be scary and many people are uncomfortable in new environments; there are many things that you can do to make sure that both you and your children are prepared for the worst when abroad.

Be Aware

You must always remember that it is easy to be taken advantage of in an unfamiliar place. No holiday destination is truly “safe.” Awareness and vigilance are key when traveling. Before you head out to another country, do your research and be aware of that country's laws, dangers, and culture. Knowledge of your destination is the most important thing you can do to ensure safety on your vacation.

Come Prepared

In the days before departing on your trip, you should sit down with your son/daughter and have a serious discussion with them about safe travel procedures. Go over any rules that might be different than from where you currently live. Ensure them that most likely nothing will go wrong, but that they should be prepared anyway. If your child is educated of the risks before you leave, there is a better chance that they will take their safety seriously and make smart decisions. Talking to your child isn’t the only prep you should do though. It’s essential that you make copies of all of your child’s documents prior to leaving, especially their passport! While you’re at it, make a copy of your passport too! Passports are a pain to get back if lost, and you would never want to be in a situation where you need it and it’s missing! rnEveryday before you head out with your family, take a picture. Not only will it be good memories to have after your trip is over, but if anyone were to go missing, you’d have a picture of what they look like that day and what they’re wearing. This would come in extremely handy in an emergency and could be the difference in the return of your child to safety. Something else you should do before you leave is make sure that your child knows how to use the phone, or more specifically, to make sure that your child can use international dialing codes and can figure out how to call you if necessary. Though you should hope that you never have to use these precautions, it’s better safe than sorry especially when in an area that you are unfamiliar with!
