It is the moral responsibility of the owner of every commercial establishment to look into the health of his employees on his premise. In most cities, this responsibility is a legal one as well. Being a business own you have to ensure that there is nothing you have not done to prevent the exposure of your employees to anything as untoward as the legionella virus. The main carrier for this is your water supply and this is something you will need to get looked into. The technology to completely find and eliminate legionella is yet to come into being, but till them a legionella risk assessment is something you will need to undertake.
Legionella is basically a kind of water based bacteria. If one takes it in small doses, it is not likely to do any harm. But continuous exposure can result in someone contracting the Legionnaire’s disease which is fatal. If it is in your water supply you will be able to eliminate it completely for a while. With result assessments you can even make sure that it is kept at bay and you have nothing to worry about.
If you plan to have an assessment, you should know that there are certain legal standards that you will need to follow. In order for you to get the details right, it would be best to find a professional who comes recommended by the state. This way you can be sure of your organization being compliant with any rules that are set out. There are numerous recognized organizations that you can approach. If you do not find them, you can easily conduct a search online and find the professional functioning close to you. Most businesses function within the same radius and you can ask some of the neighboring ones on references of the professionals they may have used.
If you are a business owner and you believe that such an assessment is unnecessary on your premises, do keep in mind that you are opening out the field for legal trouble should one of your employees contract legionnaire’s disease and the source of the virus point out to your water supply. Being able to provide a safe environment for them will keep you and your business in good stead.
Once the assessment has been completed and you are provided with the report, you should have the documentation in place. To be on the safer side, have this assessment done once every year on your water supply.
