Did you know that, on average, 7,500 workers die every day across the globe? Also, roughly one million people sustain injuries every day at the workplace. The reason? Their jobs. Yes, you read that right. Unfortunately, studies have shown that, more often than not, the root causes behind these workplace deaths are sub-standard organizational health and safety practices and standards. Understandably, there has been a growing focus on improving the workplace health and safety culture and achieving substantially enhanced safety levels for employees. More and more companies seek not merely to comply with the appropriate regulations and uphold standards but also actively ensure their employees' well-being while they are at work. Now, this spirit and enthusiasm is terrific — there is no denying that. However, before we can evaluate our options and consider measures to prevent injuries and deaths at the workplace, we must first understand where this problem arises. This means companies must take a good, hard look at all the factors and challenges that pose a risk to their employees' health and safety at work. To that end, we have listed some of the critical challenges that impede adopting a robust safety culture at the workplace. 1. Ignoring rules: It would amaze you how often employees flout the regulations and norms for ensuring their safety and health at the workplace. Sure enough, it is not always by choice — sometimes, it is the understandable lack of awareness or simple ignorance. Nonetheless, one can’t deny that these seemingly innocent actions pose a grave danger to the employees ignoring said rules and those around them. 2. Poor employee engagement: It is clear as day to see that occupational health and safety management system provide a world of benefits and safety. Unfortunately, employees may still not be inclined to participate — often, thanks to the question “How do I stand to benefit from it?” The key, then, is ensuring precise and unambiguous communication with employees. And to boost engagement, we highly recommend setting up being receptive to feedback, creating forums to encourage discussions amongst employees, etc. 3. Task management: Most people fail to realize safety management is an enormous undertaking involving tasks like assigning repetitive tasks, assessments, ensuring adoption of corrective measures, and so much more. As you can see the tasks can quickly pile up, leading folks tasked with the job to struggle to execute their responsibilities in their entirety. Now that we know about some of the key challenges, it is time to take a look at some of the best practices for ensuring top-notch levels of safety and health standards at the workplace. 1. Accountability: To establish a high-quality environment of safety and health at the workplace, it is imperative to ensure that everyone understands the role they play in achieving this goal. To do that, companies must enforce accountability for all employees. And this includes even the top brass. The imposition of all-round responsibility will result in a positive attitude towards the cause and improve requisite measures. 2. Training: A key reason employees fail to comply with safety and health regulations is that they don’t understand their execution measures. This problem can be easily addressed via training. Hence, companies must offer regular exercise and especially to new joiners, while onboarding them. 3. Reporting: A critical means of ensuring safety at the workplace is reporting — report everything, including near misses and the seemingly trivial incidents. So, be sure to communicate this to your employees as well — that they must report even the smallest of incidents. The essential element for ensuring all your employees' well-being is developing and implementing an influential safety culture at the workplace. And as this guide demonstrates, it is possible to do that despite the many challenges one may face.
