When kidney disease strikes, our instinct tells us that we have to take more care of our kidneys or expect the worse. The latter could mean reduced body functions which could result in disability and even death. One of the best ways to nurse our diseased kidneys back to health is to follow a kidney disease diet. But what exactly is a kidney disease diet?

A kidney disease diet is essentially a modified diet that is designed with one principal aim. This is to restore malfunctioning kidneys back to their normal state of operation. Even while following a normal diet, kidney disease can strike without warning. Please be reminded that although kidneys are small and unobtrusive, they serve a vital function within our bodies. They act as filters that filter water, toxins and other impurities from our bloodstream. Consequently, our blood is cleaner and we are healthier.

The onset of kidney disease affects people differently. However one must point out that kidney disease usually puts enormous stress on affected people. This results in a negative outlook towards life in general. However the confirmation of kidney disease is like an alarm bell that warns us to start taking a closer look at our kidneys. Consulting a doctor is usually the first step who will, more often than not, refer the affected person to a qualified dietician. In this manner, a kidney disease diet will be drawn up will be closely monitored by your dietician. However following such a diet could be difficult sometimes because it requires sacrifices.

Below are some kidney disease diet ideas:

1. Keeping close to your optimum body weight is important as kidney disease could result in noticeable changes in your body weight. Obviously, your weight will be calculated by your dietician and will take into account many factors. Your calorie intake will have the largest impact and most probably you will have your calorie intake adjusted as necessary to stay within limits of your ideal body weight.

2. Although water and fluids are vital to the performance of kidneys, amazingly you might be asked to watch your fluid intake. This seems contradictory but there is a very valid reason for this. Once kidneys start to operate at sub-standard performance, their filtration capabilities become very limited and, as such, cannot filter our blood properly. This leaves an excess amount of fluid within our bodies and could result in swelling of limbs or bloating. In these circumstances your dietician will more than likely recommend that you cut down on fluids and avoid items that increase thirst such as salty foods.

3. The use of unauthorized supplements such as vitamins should be avoided at all costs. Although the ingestion of certain supplements could be seen as helpful to combat disease or increase our well being, this may not be the case when suffering from kidney disease. They might even cause further damage. So stick to what your dietician recommended – no more, no less!

4. Another recommendation by your dietician would be to watch your protein intake. Why? Diseased kidneys cannot properly handle protein waste. The main waste product produced from proteins is urea and this is one of the main components of urine. Therefore foods like meat that have high protein content, are usually substituted by low protein content foods such as certain vegetables and cereals.

There are obviously more ideas to restore your kidneys back to normal performance. This is because each person is unique and requires a unique diet as advised by their dietician. And once drawn up, follow it religiously and think positive!
