Know about IATA and HAZMAT

It is a well known fact that we use various products in our daily lives. Among them there are many products in which you will find hazardous materials in some way or the other. Hence, it is to be noted that there has been an increase in the use of these dangerous materials to a great extent. This poses a serious threat to the environment as well as the mankind. However, people have finally realized that these materials can have an adverse effect. As a result several measures are now being adopted to curb the ill effects of the hazardous materials in order to safeguard the environment and human race. Many organizations have also being formed all over the world to protect the environment and nature from dangerous goods. On such organization is IATA. It stands for International Air Transport Association.

The main aim of IATA is regular and safe transport of hazardous materials through airways across the globe. Other objectives of the organization are encouraging air commerce, studying problems pertaining to air commerce, cooperating with other international organizations, etc. Further, IATA has laid down various rules and regulations which have to be followed during transportation of hazardous materials from one place to another through airways in order to protect human beings and nature from the damage that may be caused due to ill handling of dangerous goods.

rnHazmat refers to hazardous materials. It includes explosives, radioactive, oxides, liquid flammables and combustibles, gases, toxic chemicals which can cause harm to the human beings and environment. These materials they have to be transported from one place to another. Hence, there are some hazardous materials which require special permits and approvals before being transported. A special permit is nothing but a document which authorizes an individual to perform an action which is not currently permitted by the regulating authority.

rnWhen hazmat is transported from one place to another various signs or placards are used. In fact there are some preferred routes through which vehicles carrying such goods are passed. There are some banned routes as well through which they are not allowed to pass. They are tunnels or heavily populated areas where an incident or spill can cause serious disaster to the surroundings. It is also important to handle hazmat very carefully and while dealing with such materials it is necessary to wear protective clothing. Further, the people handling such materials should be qualified and trained Hazmat personnel who are authorized to handle hazardous materials.
