To know requirements to become an ERP consultant one needs to clearly understand the roles and responsibilities of an ERP consultant. Broadly roles of consultants can be divided into two categories one is functional consultant and another is technical consultant. The contribution of both in complete implementation is same, they match-up existing system with software side by side finding solutions to the existing problems, making software run smoothly and enhancing the overall efficiency and productivity of the organization. ERP is massive software containing many modules which cover nearly all the aspects of a big organization, such software has certain parameters which are needed to fulfilled to make it function, on the other hand organization owning the software has its own way and pattern of working.
An ERP consultant's major task is to implement the software in a way that efficient and productive processes either get further enhanced through automation or at least continue to function with the software and redundant, duplicate and unproductive processes get identified, removed and replaced by better and efficient processes with the help of software to elevate productivity of the organization.
Requirements to become a consultant include basic educational qualification in computers. This is necessary requirement as person should be able to understand technical and functional requirements of ERP software. This is also important because a consultant should have in-depth knowledge of minimum software requirements in order to identify the changes which are possible and rule out the ones which are not. A degree in computers is an essential requirement to become an ERP consultant.
Excellent communication skills, is also one of the important requirement to become an ERP consultant. A consultant is expected to gather all the necessary details of the existing system and explain the new method of doing same work which staff used to do manually through the software. To do this job person should have excellent communication skills and should also be an able listener. Also a consultant is expected to convince the management for making certain changes in the present system and inclusion of new processes, this is very important as right changes play a crucial role in successful ERP implementation. To shoulder these responsibilities an ERP consultant should be a good communicator.
Expert knowledge of BI tools, skills to handle large databases and ability to understand different software and their databases is also a necessary requirement to become an ERP consultant. Company might be using many small software which may have crucial data, either incorporation of these databases with main database of the ERP or establishing links to allow reporting tools to access this data for accurate information is also a major responsibility of ERP consultant.
Good knowledge of some fundamental modules like ledger, inventory, accounting, budget, purchase etc is also important requirement to become an ERP consultant. Consultant should be able to understand the manual system of an organization and knowledge of these modules makes his work faster, good knowledge of these modules improves his compatibility with the staff and better equipped to understand their problems and suggest solutions.
