Light (or superficial), medium and deep chemical peels involve the same basic elements, but have different levels of intensity and depth. A light chemical peel is best described as an accelerated form of exfoliation induced by a chemical agent. This procedure will destroy the damaged layers on the surface of your skin and stimulate epidermal growth and collagen production. Damaged skin is replaced with new skin cells for a brighter, tighter quality. Light chemical peels also are effective against acne breakouts and can help reduce acne scarring. If you have freckles, age spots or liver spots (brown discolorations) consider a medium depth chemical peel. Jacksonville-area residents are prone to freckles and spots because the warm, sunny climate keeps outside. The result is sun-induced overproduction of melanin (pigment), the substance that gives skin and hair its natural color. A medium depth peel agent penetrates into the upper layer of the dermis, eliminating brown spots, tightening collagen and smoothing fine lines. A deep chemical peel is the most intense and is primarily for those with long-term sun damage and deeper wrinkles. Deep peel agents penetrate into the inmost part of the dermis, rearranging collagen, melanocytes and other support structures of the skin. Skin may swell and take on a pink tone for several weeks - a normal response of tissues to injury. However, contrary to popular belief, it will not look red or raw. With diligent skin care and a healthy lifestyle, you can expect dramatic, permanent results from your deep chemical peel. Jacksonville's Reviva Medical Spa recommends always wearing a sun block with a minimum SPF-30, a healthy diet and avoidance of smoking and excessive alcohol to help prolong the beautiful results of your chemical peel - no matter which type you choose.
