Fiberglass is defined as a reinforced plastic material that is composed of glass fibers embedded in a resin matrix. This material is known to last for years at a stretch and doesn’t corrode. A fiberglass tank is preferred over other types of materials for underground storage of fuels and other materials. Such a tank is meant for heavy duty industrial, government or military use. The manufacturing process of such tanks is a very complex process that calls for use of high-end machines.
There are certain firms that use an inside-out approach to manufacturing such tanks. In this process, the tank is made on a steel mold and then separated from the inner mold. By using this method, it is possible to achieve a smooth and consistent inner surface that helps you store fuel in an efficient manner. As the cylindrical steel mold rotates, layers of resin, glass and processed silica are smoothly applied to its surface.
This also ensures that the tank doesn’t have any weak spots and has a uniform integrity. A tank of just about any thickness can be achieved through this method. A petroleum tank meant for underground storage is often made from fiberglass.
A fiberglass tank is available in several varieties and each type is suited for a particular purpose. Let’s take a look at some of the varieties of such tanks:
- Single wall tanks: As the name suggests, these have a single thick wall that can contain different types of materials. They are suited for storing smaller volumes of petroleum or water. If you are looking for added protection, then you shouldn’t consider these tanks.
- Double wall tanks: These tanks offer twice the amount of protection offered by a single wall tank. They have two walls, which makes them apt for storing fuels. These tanks protect you against the risks of fuel leakage that could ultimately cause contamination of soil and underground water reserves. They are excellent for long-term storage and production of fuels as well as water.
- Triple wall tanks: These tanks are the last word in flawless protection and security. They are highly recommended for use in environmentally sensitive locations, especially where tertiary containment is the needed. There are three different walls that offer enhanced security. Triple wall tanks also carry an extensive warranty.
Irrespective of which tank you are investing in, it is important to purchase UL listed tanks. Based on the exact application of the tank, your chosen manufacturer could recommend the most suitable tank for you. If you need a petroleum tank for aboveground storage, then it is prudent to opt for a steel tank. However, for most underground storage requirements, a fiberglass tank is known to be efficient.
