Kundapura is a town in Udupi district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The name Kundapura can be traced to the Kundeshvara temple built by Kundavarma in the vicinity of the Panchagangavalli river The name of the town may be derived from Kundavarma who ruled the area. Kunda means 'pillar' in Kannada,[1] which refers to the traditional method of constructing houses. Pura means town. Kundapura is surrounded by water from three sides. The ancient temple town of Kundapur has become a major tourist spot of Karnataka. Historical monuments, which include ancient temples like the Kundeshvara Temple and the Holy Rosary Church, are reminders of the bygone era and attract tourists as well as historians to Kundapur. Sri Vinayaka Temple, Mahalingeshwara Temple, Mekekattu Nadhikeshwara Temple, Hattiangadi Temple, Koteshwara Temple and Kirimanjeshwara Temple are some of the prominent pilgrim destinations in the area. Kundapur was once ruled by the Kings of Baindoor and many of their buildings and temples can still be seen today. Kundapur also has many Portuguese and Dutch influences as it was part of their settlements. The fort which was built during the colonial period is one of the most visited places in the city. The city was also ruled by the British after they defeated folk hero Tipu Sultan. Kundapur has a port which was once a flourishing trade center for the colonial powers. The city can be accessed from Mangalore, Bangalore and many other important cities in the South such as Chennai. Kundapur also has several activities to offer. Nature lovers and rock climbers often go for trekking and hiking in the nearby mountain ranges of the Western Ghats whereas beach lovers can go to the coastal areas like Kodi Beach. Boating in the backwaters of Kundapur is also a common activity. The best time to visit Kundapur is from October to April.
