The sugars which are found in milk along with other milk products are known as lactose. Someone is intolerant to lactose when they have difficulty digesting milk sugars from milk products. All of these sugars are generally divided into simpler parts, by things referred to as enzymes. Digestive problems including tummy discomfort and diarrhoea may well develop when not enough lactase is generated. This is what is referred to as lactose intolerance or lactase deficiency. Actually, the wind, bloating and discomfort brought on by eating milk products is a result of a fermentation of the milk sugars in the digestive tract. The enzyme lactase breaks up the lactose (milk sugar). This modifies the sugar into glucose and galactose - substances which the intestine has the capacity to digest. Genuine lactose intolerance typically develops following weaning. This is what's called secondary lactose tolerance, and might be brought about by things such as a spell of gastroenteritis, in which the lining of the stomach is weakened.
