Laptop Repairs: DIY or Professional Service

However many years you have put in as a computer or laptop user and however familiar you may be with the workings of your machine, when it comes to repair and regular maintenance, unless you're a qualified technical expert yourself, it's never a good policy to try the Do It Yourself or DIY route to fixing hardware or software problems.

Today the Internet is flooded with websites and forums which tell you how to fix any and every problem with your laptop. There are detailed step-by-step instructions, videos, graphics, CDs which run you through complex repair scenarios and tutorials and micro-courses in learning how to repair your laptop.

The issue with many of these self-help kits and tutorials is that there is no way they can replicate the exact problem that you're facing. Without years of experience and training, it is not feasible to try and diagnose the problem, find the proper solution, source the correct parts and fix it so that you get your machine back as good as new. Often, the problem may not have a single-point cause and there could be other small repairs which are required alongside the larger issue. As a rookie, you may not be able to recognize and fix these as well, resulting in time-consuming and costly delays or even possible damage to your valuable laptop.

Laptops are much more fragile than desktops and more easily damaged. As they're more compact, there's not much room to work in and you're liable to damage delicate parts while working on something. Additionally, DIY means you must possess the right kind of tools and testing equipment. Safety could also be an issue if you're inexperienced.

As an amateur, you probably don't have the discipline and training to re-assemble your laptop once you've fixed (or think you've fixed) the problem. Often, you could end up with loose screws, wiring and ill-fitting parts. It's definitely better to entrust such complex and time-consuming work to people who do this on a daily basis rather than risk damaging your valuable machine and all the important information that it contains.

On the other hand, if you're passionate about hands-on repair and you've got considerable experience in the area of computer/laptop repair, then DIY can be rewarding, cheap and fun. You can also give yourself customized solutions, your data is completely safe, you are not dependent on others and you can use the money you save to get yourself some nice new peripherals.
