Less Pain and Healing Time with Laser Teeth Procedures or Gum Surgery

Laser dentistry can be used in a wide variety of dental treatments including cosmetic, preventative and restorative procedures. Using a scalpel typically causes trauma and bleeding, but replacing it with a dental laser reduces a significant amount of the discomfort, bleeding, and healing time for the patient.

How does dental laser technology work?

The laser produces a narrow focused beam of light energy which is used to remove, shape, or cut tissue instead of a scalpel. The laser-tissue interaction stimulates our bodies healing power by increasing circulation, collagen formation, fibroblast (increases connective tissue) and osteoblast activity (increase bone remodeling). This reduces trauma during the procedure, speeds healing times, and reduces discomfort after the procedure is complete.

What types of treatment does laser dentistry cover?

  • Laser frenectomy: Easily removes muscular attachment between the lip and attached gum tissue which impedes normal function (such as speech), and has proven to work well for children in combination with orthodontics (braces).
  • Laser periodontal/gum surgery: Effectively treats gum and bone infection around the tooth and reduces periodontal pockets. After removing the debris/calculus and flushing the periodontal pocket, the laser removes any infected tissue remaining, kills any remaining bacteria, and promotes faster healing.
  • Laser biopsy: Suspicious looking lesion/s on the tongue, cheek, lip, and gum can be quickly removed for cancer detection. The area heals much faster with dental laser technology than a scalpel, and often stitches are not required
  • Laser gum remodeling in smile enhancement procedures: Corrects or reshapes uneven gums for a beautiful smile.
  • Dental laser treatment of cold sores (Herpetic lesions): Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus coming down the nerve and causing a lesion around the lip. The heat and healing energy of the laser can kill these bacteria. No anesthetic is used. All the patient feels is a warming sensation and it takes less than five minutes to complete.
  • Laser spot removal: Specifically the removal of hemangioma which are purple venous spots on the lips.

Laser dentistry has been in use since the 1990s and is FDA-approved. It is precise, effective and safe, increasing patient comfort, confidence and satisfaction.

Why Choose Dental Laser Treatments?

Many people put off a visit to the dentist for the fear of pain. Neglect worsens dental issues and has also been known to affect overall health and well-being. Dental lasers are a boon in that they have contributed to a more comfortable and positive experience especially for individuals who are pain-sensitive.

The multiple benefits of laser dentistry are being utilized in numerous procedures. When used for surgical and dental procedures, the laser acts as a cutting instrument of tissue that it comes in contact with. The laser cut is so specific that it is less than five cells deep of trauma past the cutting zone. This reduces inflammation so there is less pain and faster healing.

As with all dental procedures, the experience and training of your dentist is essential.
