If you are ready to undergo LASIK surgery, you can overcome your nervousness by becoming knowledgeable about what to expect during the procedure. By being mentally and physically prepared, you will be calmer when the time comes to have the eye surgery.

Pre-Operative Information from Your Surgeon

The doctor you will be working with should make an effort to explain the entire process. During your consultation, your doctor will tell you all about the surgery and what you are able to expect. Normally, the surgery will last just 15 minutes. Your consultations before and after the surgery will make up the longest part of your time at the surgical centre.

When you have a prescription which is stronger or higher than the majority of patients, you should be aware that the process may take longer. The doctor will have to take more time completing the LASIK surgery process to be sure that the optimum eyesight is accomplished.

Being Accompanied By a Member of the Family or Friend

It's a requirement that you have someone to drive you to and from the procedure, as you will not be able to open your eyes when the surgery is completed. The doctor will provide you with eye shields, so that you can give your eyes a well needed rest and so that proper healing can occur. With the surgeon’s permission, your chosen family member or friend could possibly be with you while the procedure is carried out.

Using a Sedative during the Procedure

A number of patients can be extremely nervous prior to the surgery. Most surgeons can give you a mild sedative that can be taken before the LASIK surgery commences. This can make sure that you remain at ease, before and during, the procedure. It also helps you nap after the procedure is over.

Understanding That You Will Be Awake During Surgery

To ensure that the procedure is correctly carried out, you will be awake throughout. The process is relatively painless. Eye drops are used that will numb your eyes to prepare them for the procedure. A member of the LASIK staff will be with you for the duration of the surgery.
After the Surgery

It is not unusual for patients to gain a substantial improvement in eye function immediately after surgery. In other cases, patients will experience a steady improvement in their eyesight. Before you leave after your surgery, your medical team will make sure that you are responding well to the treatment you have been given. You will be prescribed pain medication if you want it. You will also be supplied with eye drops and medical advice.
Appointments After the Surgery & Medical Recommendationsr
It is vital that you use your eye shields and that you follow the recovery schedule that was given to you, to gain the best results possible. You must also attend each of your follow-up appointments, as your doctor has to check that your eyes are improving correctly.

LASIK eye surgery shouldn’t be nerve-wracking if you know about the procedure. If you have any questions about the process, just be sure that you talk about these queries with your doctor before the surgical procedure takes place.
