Lawn Care Tips for During Summer
Nothing brings stress to homeowners who are keen on landscaping than the knowledge that summer is approaching; this is especially true in relation to lawn grasses. There is the heat and drought that gives a homeowner extra work to do and especially when you realize that winter was not easier either on the lawn just a few months earlier. Lawn treatment during summer involves such tasks as mowing correctly, watering, weed control and fertilizing together with landscape maintenance.
Water: You must remember that your lawn will require at least an inch of water weekly and much more if the weather is hotter. The turf needs to be irrigated as soon as you observe signs of distress such as a bluish grey color, folded leaf blades or when you leave footprints on the grass after walking on it. The application of water requires the right quantities and timing; about 1 inch of water a week applied between 4 to 7 am.
How to mow: Lawn treatment at this time dictates that the mowing is more regular. When the conditions are good this should be done at least twice weekly and the mower blade should always be raised during summer. Avoid mowing the lawn too short during summer because this could lead to damage of the grass. Take note also that tall grasses develop deeper roots and are therefore more drought resistant.
Applying fertilizer: Feeding your lawn is a good part of lawn treatment because it is a living thing. You need to make sure that your lawn receives its share of fertilizer treatment sometime in the month of June. Better still; fertilize your lawn soon after mowing when the grass is dry. Avoid fertilizing moist grass because should fertilizer stick on the leaves it will burn your lawn. Get someone who does commercial landscape management to advice you on the correct type of fertilizer so you can have a smooth green lawn; how much fertilizer you apply will depend on its formulation.
Weed Control: You want to make sure that you stop weeds from blooming and spreading and there is no better time to do that than during summer. Ask a lawn care specialist about modern herbicides that will kill broad based leaf weeds without affecting your lawn at all. However, always remember that herbicides need to be applied when you expect no more than 85 degrees F. if there are chewed or bitten lawn roots or your lawn is patchy there may be a bigger problem such as larvae that needs to be addressed.
Maintenance: Make sure that the entire landscape is kept clean all the time and especially during fall. Don’t leave debris and leaves to get their way to your garden soil because they will end up doing more harm than good.
