If you have ever wondered how to treat constipation? Then you must have heard about these two terms - Laxative and Stool softener. So first let us talk about what laxative is. It is a substance that helps you with bowel movement. Whereas a stool softener is a laxative, however, not all laxatives are stool softeners. Moreover, there are several kinds of laxatives because different things can lead to you feeling constipated and laxatives work in different ways to resolve it. Some work specifically on your stool and some on the intestine, and some on both.

1. Emollient laxative (also called stool softener)

Ingredients involved: docusate sodium and docusate calcium. What are their functions? These help wet and soften the stool. And, why should you use it? To begin with, stool softeners are gentle and helps prevent constipation. However, they have a mild effect and can be consumed to treat temporary constipation.

2. Osmotic laxatives

Osmotic laxatives function by drawing water into the intestines. It might not be the best option for people who have constipation because of dehydration. So if you are using this, then make sure to drink more water than usual.

3. Fibre-based laxatives

Several doctors recommend a bulk-forming laxative that contains soluble fibre if you are someone who doesn’t consume a lot of fibre regularly. And, they might also suggest fibre-based laxatives if you suffer from chronic or long-lasting constipation. They are considered a safer option for long-term use than other laxatives due to the little risk of long-term side effects associated with it.

4. Saline laxatives

Just like osmotic laxatives, saline also pulls water into the stool. Saline does this by using mineral salts, like magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide. However, Saline laxatives may not suit everyone. For instance, people who take medications to lower their sodium levels or are consuming another mineral-based medication like medicine that reduces the calcium in the kidneys should also avoid taking saline laxatives.

5. Stimulant laxatives

They are a great option for fast relief if you are suffering from painful constipation. The stimulating effect that is present in these laxatives makes the stool move smoothly and swiftly through the colon and increases the liquid in the stool simultaneously. But, you shouldn’t consume them regularly as it may cause the body to become dependent on the laxative to have a bowel movement. Different Forms Laxatives come in an array of forms and some of them are as follows:

Stool softeners:

Whereas, stimulant laxatives take about 6 to 12 hours. And then saline laxatives work a little more quickly and just take 30 minutes to six hours.rnRegardless of which type of laxative you are consuming, rectal enemas and suppositories usually work the fastest. They take about two to 15 minutes, but in some cases have taken up to an hour to work. Dosage For laxatives, the dosage varies depending on the type. You shouldn’t use laxatives for more than a week. In case your bowels are not regular even after consuming them for a week, then you need to consult the doctor. So usually, laxatives are considered safe for people who are above the age of 12.
