Emollient laxatives

Hyperosmotic laxatives

Hyperosmotic laxatives raise the amount of fluid that is present in the bowels. Then the increased fluid helps in softening the stool and allows it to pass easily. There are different types of hyperosmotic laxatives that take different time to work, such as: ● Saline - Saline laxatives are made up of salts in liquid. These medications are used for the short-term treatment of constipation. It takes 30 minutes to 3 hours for these laxatives to work. ● Polymer - These laxatives are made of large molecules like polyethylene glycol. Just like saline laxatives, these laxatives are also used for short-term treatment. ● Lactulose - Lactulose majorly consists of sugar-like compounds. These laxatives are used for treating chronic or long-term constipation and take around 48 to 72 hours to work.

Suppositories

Suppositories are medications that are inserted into the rectum. This type of laxative dissolves in the bloodstream and starts working. Based on the active ingredient in the medicine it either stimulates the muscles of the bowels to allow the stool to move easily or softens the stool. It works within 15 to 30 minutes.

Stimulant laxatives

Stimulates cause contraction in the muscles of the bowel and allow the stool to pass out through the bowel readily. It takes around 6 to 12 hours for it to work effectively.
