Laying Bathroom Floor Properly

Laying down a well-done bathroom floor can seem like a daunting task but, in fact, it can be a fulfilling task when executed correctly. Those looking to beautify their bathrooms themselves can rest assured that the mission can be accomplished because we will provide a beginner’s guide to laying a bathroom floor. First and foremost, rugs and anything else on the floor must be cleared from the bathroom so that measurements can be taken and the area will be clear for tiling. This includes the toilet, so in order to move that, use the shutoff valve to turn off the water supply to the toilet and empty the bowl by flushing away the water. Rock the toilet back and forth in order to break the seal and remove it from the flange, then simply sit it aside. After cleaning the flange, be sure to stuff with paper towel filled plastic bags so that sewage gases can be prevented from leaking inside. With the proper tools such as a hammer, chisel, or pry bar, carefully lift and remove the flooring that is already there along with any staples and tacks beneath. Thoroughly sweep away any debris so that there is a bare surface to work with. Now it’s best to make a rough sketch of the bathroom and then take measurements of the floor area, leaving out the parts covered by the tub or vanity. This drawing with the measurements should be taken to a hardware store so that the proper flooring can be purchased and remember to buy a little bit more than is anticipated to be needed, for trial and error. A really important step for actually laying the floor is to screw subfloor to the plywood that was in the bathroom under the previous flooring. This acts as the base of any good flooring and creates stability. Now do a practice run of laying down the tiles in the pattern that you want for your bathroom. Laying out the pattern first allows for any adjustments that may need to be done. Once the tiles are fitted as you like, apply adhesive to each tile as you go and work to lay them in the direction of the door, using spacers to create consistency in the area between tiles. Once all tile has been placed, apply grout to the joints in a small area of the room at a time so that any stray bits can be cleaned up before it dries.
