Stainless steel 316 belongs to the austenitic grade, which is highly corrosion resistant due to the presence of 2% to 3% molybdenum. SS316 steel is resistant to pitting and can withstand high temperatures. As it comes under the umbrella of the austenitic category, it is much more useful than other nickel-chromium stainless steel grades such as SS302. SS 316 Chemical Composition
  • Manganese 2.00
  • Molybdenum 2.00 – 3.00
  • Carbon 0.08
  • Phosphorus 0.045
  • Nickel 10.00 – 14.00
  • Sulfur 0.030
  • Silicon 0.75
  • Iron Bal
  • Chromium 16.00 – 18.00
  • As there is molybdenum in the SS 316 chemical composition, this grade has amazing corrosion resistance properties. It is highly resistant to crevice corrosion and pitting, commonly found in chloride environments. It is a useful stainless steel because its austenitic structure can withstand great toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. It contains 10% nickel, 16% chromium, and 2% molybdenum content. Application of SS316 The corrosion-resistant nature of 316 stainless steel is because of its high chromium content. This chromium content of 316 grades differentiates them from other stainless-steel grades. As it contains molybdenum, it is suitable for application in marine environments such as the oil and gas industry. The molybdenum content in this grade protects it against acidic and aggressive environments. SS316 provides good protection against tartaric acid, acetic acid, hydrochloric, and sulfuric acid. Therefore, it is widely used in the paper handling industry and food-processing industries. What is stainless steel 410? SS410 belongs to the martensitic stainless-steel category with low carbon content in SS 410 chemical composition. As it contains high copper, nickel, and cobalt content, it has good hardenability. SS 410 contains 11.5% to 13.5% chromium content, making it moderately resistant to corrosion. This corrosion-resistant feature of SS 410 can be improved further through different processes such as hardening, polishing, tempering, etc. This grade has amazing hardness after it is treated with heat. SS 410 Chemical Composition 410 stainless steel contains manganese, phosphorus, carbon, silicon, nickel, sulfur, and chromium content in its composition.
  • Manganese: 1.00
  • Chromium: 11.50-13.50
  • Sulfur: 0.030
  • Carbon: 0.08 – 0.15
  • Nickel 10.00 – 14.00
  • Phosphorus: 0.040
  • Iron: Balance
  • Silicon: 1.00
  • Stainless steel 410 is highly resistant to corrosion, air, acetic acid, and water. It is moderately resistant to nitric acid, ammonia, dilute acetic acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, and naphtha. Additionally, S410 offers excellent scaling resistance and high-temperature oxidation resistance. Application of SS410 410 stainless steel metal is high in hardness and strength. The grade is magnetic when hardened or annealed as it contains carbon in its chemical composition; therefore, it has excellent edge retention and resistance power after hardening. As it is low alloy steel, it is economical and has good thermal conductivity properties.  This stainless-steel grade has excellent resistance to water, air, steam, hot gas, and mild acids and has moderate resistance to chemicals like nitric acid, ammonia, naptha, concentrated sulfuric acid, dilute acetic acid, etc. This grade is used in valve components shafts, steam, gas turbine components, etc. You will also find the stainless-steel grade in automobile companies and manufacturing press plates, gate valves, cutlery, petroleum refining industries, surgical industry, etc.
