Anxiety attacks can be particularly frightening, which is why it is so important to learn how to overcome anxiety attacks. While there are certainly many medications that are purported to treat anxiety, these medications can have a number of unpleasant side effects and are not effective at treating anxiety long-term. Natural methods for treating anxiety can teach you how to actually stop an anxiety attack before it starts and can effectively be used over the long-term without any fear of side effects. nnThe ultimate goal in learning how to stop anxiety attacks is to locate the source of your anxiety. Of course, this can differ from one person to another; but discovering what is triggering your anxiety can help you to effectively end your anxiety attacks. This may take some time and may even require the assistance of a therapist; however, it is well worth the effort. nnOne way to begin learning which triggers may be contributing to your anxiety attacks is to start a journal. Keep track of what is going on in your life when you begin experiencing an anxiety attack. You may be surprised at what you learn. nnIn the meanwhile, until you are able to uncover the source of your anxiety, there are several techniques which can be used to help you cope with and even learn how to overcome anxiety attacks before they are able to blossom into full fledged attacks that leave you weak and frightened. nnLearning to breathe properly is also essential to learning how to control your anxiety attacks. When we experience an anxiety attack, typically one of the first symptoms we experience is an increased rate of breathing. If this continues, it can lead to other symptoms which become a vicious cycle. Practice inhaling slowly for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven and then slowly exhale through your mouth. Try to prolong the breath as you exhale for up to 8 seconds. nnTry also focusing on your anxiety. Pretend that it is a real, live object; which in most cases may be quite realistic. Tell your anxiety to go away. Remind yourself that you are in control and that you will not allow yourself to be controlled by your anxiety. Tell yourself, verbally, if necessary that there is actually nothing wrong and that you will get through this moment. nnWork on relaxing your muscles. Begin with your feet and clench the muscles and then release them. Work your way gradually up your body; tightening and relaxing your muscles as you go until you reach your head. Repeat this exercise until you feel your anxiety dissipate. nnKeep in mind that even if you are having an anxiety attack in public, remember that in most cases most other people will not realize what is going on. This can be used to your advantage to gain control of your anxiety. With time you can learn how to overcome anxiety attacks. n
