Do you know that your front yard is the first thing that people see when they pass by your house or come for a visit? Landscaping is a great way of improving the physical aspect of your home, but you don’t need to be an expert in making your lawn look great and stay healthy. The art of gardening is part of studying horticulture courses. If you don’t have the luxury of time to attend formal classes, then you can go for online horticulture training. Knowing how your plants grow and its proper care will help you on whatever activity that you plan to do. Here some few tips on how you can easily manage your lawns.

Try to mow your grasses high to about 3 inches in height. If you cut the grass to 1-2 inches short, you would need to maintain and mow it every 2 -5 days to keep it attractive to look at. Keeping the grass this short also makes it prone to pest and drought because of weakened root systems. Weeds also have the tendency to outgrow the grass if they are shorter, and can drain the nutrients that should have been for the grasses. Keeping the grasses high will take less work from you, probably have 5-15 days interval between cuttings. Try to keep the blades of your lawn mower sharp. If blades are dull they just tear the grass instead of cutting it clean. When grasses are torn, the “wounds” created may expose the grass to disease pathogens such as fungi. Replace damaged blades and sharpen them regularly.

Contrary to popular belief, grass clippings do not leave nor create thatches. Grass clippings are thin enough to settle down on the soil surface. Allow nature to do its work and have the earthworms consume and turn them into natural fertilizers. Improper disposal of grass clippings may be hazardous if they reach water reservoirs. They contain phosphorus and when piled in large amounts, may cause pollution. Water the grass properly. The best time to water is between 4 and 8 in the morning so that heat from the morning sun will dry the leaves. Wet grass increases the risk of diseases, so never water the grass at night. Understanding how your plants grow will help you keep them healthy and strong.
