Hiring a tutor is a great idea. Learning from a CD/book is fine! But a tutor can answer your questions and give you individualized help, and that obviously is not possible with a book or CD. Tutors are generally fluent in what ever language they're teaching. They should be able to teach you about specific dialects within the language. You understand and be understood better if you take the time to learn local dialects. What's important is that a tutor will help you to understand the casual use of certain words. Also, CDs and books tend to be more formal. A tutor can teach you slang! You can use the web! The internet is full of tips and tricks for helping people learn Spanish. Here's a fabulous tool: Babelfish, it's a translation bot. Just type in your sentence or word, and it will translate into Spanish. A tool like this is extremely helpful because you can learn much faster. Remember, how a sentence is structured in English is not necessarily how the sentence will be structured in Spanish! Using a translation tool will show you how the words get moved around to make sense in Spanish. You can also find other online tools to help you learn Spanish, or any other language. You'll learn faster if you can watch Spanish language TV or movies. Any movie rental store offers foreign language films, and it seems there's no shortage of Spanish TV. You'll hear how Spanish words are suppose to be spoken. If you can't find someone to speak Spanish with, this will help you a great deal. You can start out by leaving the subtitles on. Then, as you learn to identify parts of speech and words, you can turn off the subtitles and see how much you understand. The more you do this, the more of the language you will pick up! If you research the subject, you'll find that there are a wide variety of methods that can help you learn faster. There's no reason not to take advantage of the many sources of help that are out there today. Some hints will work for you while other hints won't. If you try several systems, you'll eventually find one or more that feel right for you. When you do find a system, teacher or course that you like, stick with it and Spanish will soon become second nature to you!
