Reasons Why Legacy Migrations Fail & How to Avoid Them?
- Deficient planning: A lack of or insufficient planning can lead to suboptimal outcomes and delays and a variety of other problems, such as cost overruns, during the migration project. Thankfully, it is simple enough to deal with this challenge: start with assessing the legacy apps to understand their complexity & specific migration needs. It is also imperative that the team tasked with the migration process also sets out unambiguous goals and objectives for the migration process.
- Faulty cost estimates: It should go without saying that migrating legacy applications to the cloud involve various cost factors, such as data transfer, infrastructure, ongoing maintenance & licensing. Unfortunately, arriving at an accurate cost estimate for the migration can be challenging since several factors can affect the cost. So, how does one contend with this challenge? A good starting point would be analyzing the organization’s existing infrastructure costs and then comparing them with the estimated costs of running applications on a cloud platform of your preference.
- Wrong migration approach: Given that there are many different ways to migrate legacy applications to the cloud, it can be confusing to decide which option is best suited for your project’s unique requirements. Typically, the ideal approach for a given organization will depend on the specific needs of the applications and the organization. Also, assess different migration strategies, such as rehosting, refactoring, rearchitecting, or rebuilding, based on the desired outcomes, the app’s complexity, requirements, etc.
- No or improper employee training: It does not take a genius to see why offensive or no training would be problematic. You see, unless employees are properly trained on the new cloud-based applications, they will not be able to use said apps and tools effectively, thus leading to customer dissatisfaction, losses in productivity, etc. So, invest in upskilling and training programs that help familiarize employees with cloud computing, best practices, and cloud tools.
