When it comes to turning the images you’ve captured with your camera into photo prints, the process of photo printing has been revolutionised by the advent of digital photography. Whereas once, film had to be physically developed by experts, the whole process is now simple enough to take into your own hands.

Before almost all photography became digital in nature, the process that was involved in photo developing was extremely complicated, somewhat long winded and could be very expensive. This was, in main part, down to the fact that the images captured by the camera were held on a strip of celluloid film, and it was this film which had to be taken out and turned into photographs. The film had to be removed carefully, ensuring that it didn’t get damaged and was at no point exposed to light, and once this had been done it had to be taken to a specialist to be turned into photographs. The laboratory tended to be based in a pharmacist, or would, in some cases, be situated at the other end of the country, meaning that the film had to be sent away by post. No matter where the lab was, though, there would then be a lengthy wait until you got the pictures back, and even then there was usually only one single printed copy of each individual image. You could order more, but you’d have to do so before seeing the finished image and, even then, it would cost a lot more.

Digital photo printing is something completely different. In a wonderful example of technology making life simpler for ordinary people, it is now possible to capture as many photographs as you like on the memory of your camera, mobile phone or hand held tablet. Once you’ve done so, you can go through the myriad of images and choose which of them you like enough to print as photos. Unlike the pre-digital days, you get to see a preview of the image before choosing whether to have it printed or not, and once you’ve selected your favourites, it’s generally just a question of loading them onto your computer and then, with a couple of clicks of the mouse sending them to the printer. What’s more, before clicking ‘print’, you can alter features such as the cropping of the image and, in some cases, tweak the colour to make sure it looks exactly as you’d wish it to look. The number of photo prints you produce is entirely up to you, meaning that you can create enough to share your favourites out with friends and family.

As if all that wasn’t enough, it’s also possible to turn your favourite images into bespoke gift items such as gallery standard canvas prints. The process is almost as simple as that used for printing ordinary pictures, with the software guiding you through the process step by step until you’ve produced a gallery quality work of art utilising one of your own photographs.

Thanks to the march of digital technology, photo printing is now about much more than just having your favourite images to look at. It means that you can take the best of these photo prints and turn them into a dazzling range of gifts.

Science is, at its core, a process—a framework for testing questions about the world with detailed and structured observations of it to gain knowledge and understanding. Contrary to what some may believe, the scientific process has always been a universal one, accessible to the common people, even if the largest and most newsworthy discoveries are usually left to those with greater time and resources. However, with modern technologies like AI, that reality is primed for rad
