The diagnosis and your options for treatment Each year nearly 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with Kidney Cancer and approximately 13,000 will die from it. Kidney Cancer is more prevalent in men and is typically diagnosed between the ages of 50 and 70 years old. Cancer can form in the small tubes inside the kidney that are used to filter blood and where urine is collected. Kidney Cancer is somewhat resistant to treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy; therefore, the standard treatment for localized kidney cancer is the surgical removal of the tumors or the removal of part of the kidney. Traditionally, the surgery has been performed via an open approach, meaning your doctor would handle the removal through a large incision in the abdomen. Alternatively, the procedure can be performed through laparoscopic surgery which is less invasive but restricts the doctor’s dexterity, vision, and overall control. There is also a robotic-assisted surgery for kidney cancer which you will want to consider if you are determined to be a candidate for the procedure. The da Vinci Surgical System uses state-of-the-art technology that lets your doctor perform a more precise operation. The benefits include:
    • Less Discomfortrn• Less blood lossrn• Fewer transfusionsrn• Less risk of infectionrn• Less scarring • Shorter recovery timern• Increased potential for kidney preservation
With the da Vinci robotic-assisted kidney surgery the surgeon gains added precision and dexterity, leading to better clinical outcomes in the treatment of kidney cancer. Dr. Agarwal is an expert in the area of robotic-assisted surgery. He has instructed many colleagues in the uses of the procedure and will be happy to discuss your options and candidacy for surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System.
