The prostate is a gland that makes up part of the male reproductive system. It produces the fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. It surrounds the urethra, which is the canal that passes urine from the bladder out of the body. During the teenage years of a male, the prostate grows to approximately the size of a walnut. Though the reason is unknown, the prostate might begin to grow again as a man reaches his middle years. As the prostate enlarges, (also known as BPH), it puts pressure on the urethra. As it grows further, the prostate may actually constrict the urethra drastically, causing difficulty commencing urination or producing a weak urine stream (compare this to a clamp on a garden hose). It can be associated with bothersome symptoms that are typically associated with urinary tract infections. Symptoms may include: *The sudden urge to urinatern*Difficulty starting and stopping your urine streamrn*The need to push or strain when urinatingrn*Dribblingrn*The sensation that the bladder is not empty after urinatingrn*Weak urine flowrn*Increased or decreased frequency of urinationrn*Frequent nighttime urinationrn*Burning or pain during urinationrn*Incontinencern*Blood in urine These symptoms can have a life altering effect on a man’s life. Many men often change their lives to accommodate the need to urinate frequently. If symptoms such as those mentioned above become intolerable, treatment is often necessary to get your life back. Dr. Saurabh Agarwal provides minimally invasive laser surgery for BPH with the GreenLight™ Laser Therapy that combines the effectiveness of the traditional surgical procedure known as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) with the benefit of fewer side effects. The GreenLight™ laser system delivers a solution freeing you from urinary tract symptoms, and the constraints that come with frequent urination allowing you to be free and on the go!
