Queens, New York-- Day 1 of the 72nd World Tournament of Straight Pool kicked off with a full house this Sunday. This billiards tournament, the largest 14.1 event in the world, will be housed at the Carom Café for six days from July 29 through August 3, 2012. Each year, the World Tournament in 14.1 brings the greatest players in the world together to compete for the prestigious world champion title and for die-hard pool fans and 14.1 aficionados. Sixty-four of the world’s greatest pool players are expected to play, led by reigning champion Thorsten Hohmann of Germany. Two-time World 14.1 Champion, Oliver Ortmann, is also scheduled to appear. World Champions Allen Hopkins and Stephan Cohen of France are also expected to contend for The World Tournament Cup and prize money. Olhausen Tables, Championship Cloth & Aramith Balls Sponsor the Predator World Tournament of 14.1. The format for the event will be the same as the past six years: 64 players divided into 8 groups of 8 players in a round robin format playing races to 100. The top 32 players will advance to a double elimination tournament races to 150. The top 16 players will then advance to a single elimination race to 200 points.The World Tournament Champion will also have his/her name inscribed on the 14.1 Champion's Cup alongside the names of previous winners such as Martin, Ortmann, Mosconi, Feijen, Hohmann, Lassiter, Cohen, and Mizerak.
