With the advancement in technology, it has been noted that people are living healthier and life expectancy is increasing. It is for this reason also that professionals of today are able to work much longer compared to the earlier generations. Many older people are also actively seeking a career at a later stage in life. Just because you are in your prime doesn’t mean you need to stop doing what you love doing, especially in relation to your work or career. It is important, however, that you keep the right balance between your life and career if you want to stay healthy and happy. Below are some fascinating tips and statistics about how older people can find the right balance: Working past the age of 60 - 54% of workers over the age of 60 are putting their retirement on hold - 53% of 60 plus years old workers intend to work either part time or full time after retirement - Most 60 year olds plan to pursue careers in retail, customer service, and consulting - More than 50 percent of employers hired older workers in 2014 - A huge percentage of the workforce in the near future is expected to be made up of over 60’s - 62 percent choose to stay employed to remain mentally active - 31 percent of them stay employed to earn money How to Get the Right Work-Life Balance 1. Find the right job for you It doesn’t matter if you choose to stay in your current role, or you want to look for another job, the important thing is that you find a job that fits you perfectly. As people get old, their perspectives get old, too. Thus, you need to find a role or position that will make you feel fulfilled and valued. Ask yourself these: a. Who am I right now? Are you more family oriented or more career oriented? b. What do I want exactly? Do I want to work only afte oons or can I work Monday to Friday? c. What is important to me? Do I need to make money, or help others, or spend time with family? 2. Aim for flexibility If you are open to the idea of gradually withdrawing from the workplace, it would be best if you work part time or with a flexible schedule. You may discuss with your employer what flexible employment arrangements you can receive. You need to convince your employer how beneficial it is for the company to keep you and your skills. 3. Consider the needs of your family Older people have a need to be part of the lives of their children and grandchildren, and they also need someone to look after them. Thus, it is important for the entire family to be involved in discussing what the setup would be for the elderly. 4. Exercise on a regular basis One of the most important things you should do to stay away from chronic diseases is to stay active, which you can achieve by doing regular exercise. Take note that you don’t have to go to the gym to work out. There are many forms of exercises that do not demand much from you physically, such as gardening, walking, or even playing golf. Stretching is also very important. You may join a yoga class through which you can improve flexibility and eliminate the discomfort of such conditions as arthritis. 5. Socialize In any life coaching program, the importance of networking and socializing is always emphasized. It’s because socializing with other people will help keep your mind sharp, and it will also reduce your stress levels.
