Life Coaching: How to Deal with Temperamental People at Work

Having to work with temperamental people is not easy at all. In fact, being around and having to deal with people who easily lose their cool can take away all the fun in your job! It can also be very intimidating to work with a person like this, and if you're not very careful, you may find yourself getting trapped in dealing with him or her in unhealthy ways. You might end up constantly following this person's orders, blaming yourself for this person's mistakes, or totally avoiding this person. If you have to deal with a temperamental person at work, you will find the following suggestions really helpful: #1 - Understand that you are not the problem. It's important that you understand that your behavior is not the problem here. The cause of the problem is the other person's emotional instability. Realize that you are never responsible for how anyone around you reacts even if they keep blaming you for their frustration. The fact is that every one of us is responsible for our own behavior and not the behavior of others. #2 - Stop catering to their demands. We all agree that governments should never negotiate with terrorists, and this is exactly how you should deal with a tyrant in the workplace. When you negotiate or cater to another person's demands, this will do nothing to improve their behavior and attitude towards you. If you let them get what they want from you, they will just keep asking you to do everything for them. #3 - Set boundaries and maintain them. When it comes to dealing with difficult people in the workplace, it's important that there be healthy boundaries. While it's true that you have to treat everyone with respect and kindness, this doesn't mean that you should be their slave. Thus, you must set boundaries, especially with difficult people so you can protect yourself from abuse. This is going to be uncomfortable at first and you may even feel guilty about it, but this is necessary if you want to maintain a good professional relationship with that person. #4 - Ask for help when you need it. If you can handle this type of situation with the person involved, that's very ideal in solving the issue. However, there are instances where your own efforts will just not be enough. Thus, you need to call in some reinforcements. You should not hesitate to talk to your manager to seek help regarding this problem you have with a coworker.
