The attractive market town of Cockermouth lies just outside the Lake District National Park boundaries. The hills of the Lake District form a backdrop to this ancient town. Cockermouth grew up at the junctions of the River Cocker and River Derwent and the area was once inhabited by the Romans. The town has a 13th century castle which stands in ruins today and is privately owned. However during the July Cockermouth Festival, tours are available. Main Street is wide and long and this is where most of the town's shops can be found. Leading off Main Street to the south are squares and picturesque streets with yet more shops. A good deal of Cockermouth's medieval street plan still exists today and this, together with other historically interesting features and fine architecture, led to the town's inclusion in a Department of the Environment list of "gem towns" recommended to be preserved as part of the UK's national heritage. Both William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy were born here and many visitors come to see the Georgian House in which they were born and which provides a fascinating glimpse into their young lives. The house is now owned by the National Trust. Another of the town's famous sons was Fletcher Christian who led the Mutiny on the Bounty and he is buried at the town's graveyard. The town's proximity to mountains and lakes are a draw for tourists. Cockermouth makes an ideal starting point for trips to the lakes. As well as fine scenery there are other attractions such as the Kirkgate Centre for film, theatre, music and art. The town brews its own beer too. Jennings Brewery operates from the town and visitors enjoy the tours around the brewery where the various processes used in traditional brewing are explained. The area surrounding Cockermouth has many interesting attractions including the Whinlatter Forest Park. Within the park are forest trails, a visitor centre and café. Nearby too is the Bassenthwaite nature reserve where nature lovers enjoy seeing Ospreys from various viewing points. Cockermouth has a reputation for having many amenities and high standard activities including a sports centre with a swimming pool, horse and pony riding, golf, tennis, squash, sheep dog trials, cycling, fell racing and fishing on the Cocker and Derwent rivers as well as being home to the Lakeland Sheep & Wool Centre. The Cockermouth and District Civic Trust have produced a guide to walks through the town's history. The children who attend Cockermouth School have created small numbered cast iron plaques which help guide visitors around the Town Trail. Cockermouth is a place that is firmly on the tourist trail and yet it has definitely not been spoiled in any way by tourism. As well as fascinating shops and restaurants there are good pubs providing a warm welcome to visitors. The town prides itself on its cleanliness, fine buildings and historic interest. Combine this with the stunning Lake District scenery on its doorstep and a recipe for interest, fun, good food and great sights is ensured. Photographers in particular enjoy the changing colours of the hills overlooking the town.
