Life In The Surrounding Area Of Faugh
England's second largest county, Cumbria is undoubtedly one of Britain's most famously beautiful areas. Home, of course, to the Lake District as well as areas of the North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales. With easy access to the border areas, it is a mainly rural area complete with some large market towns as well as scattered villages. The beauty of the scenery makes Cumbria one of the UK's primary tourist destinations. Faugh, Brampton and Head's Nook are all villages within easy reach of Carlisle. Carlisle is Cumbria's county town and located where three rivers, the Eden, the Caldew and the Petteril, meet. The city is only ten miles from the Scottish border and so the three nearby villages are ideal for visiting the lovely border area. Carlisle was a recognised Roman settlement, whose main purpose was to cater to the forts stretched along Hadrian's Wall. Carlisle has always played an important strategic role, thanks to its closeness to Scotland. The castle was built in the 1090s and was once the prison to Mary, Queen of Scots. During the Industrial revolution, Carlisle became an important mill town then a significant railway town. A city since 1974, it is the main cultural and commercial centre of northern Cumbria. Ten miles east of Carlisle is the village of Brampton. Constructed from local sandstone it is nestled in a hollow formed during the Ice Age. This means that the village is unseen from farther afield. It is a beautiful cobbled village which has been relatively unchanged for over 150 years. The period of greatest growth took place in the 1950s when the Spadeadam Rocket Establishment opened and became a huge local employer. The influx of workers changed the character of the town somewhat and the closure of the Spadeadam complex made a huge impact on the village. The village has some interesting historical buildings such as the old Parish Church, which was built in Norman times using stone from Hadrian's Wall. The most impressive building is perhaps, the Moot Hall which was originally constructed in the mid 1600s. A local weekly market is still held around the hall till this day. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking thanks to the many lovely paths around. Nearby Gelt Wood is lovely and as well as being an RSPB reserve there is a rock inscription just above the River Gelt, which was thought to have been carved by a Roman soldier in the 3rd century. Faugh and Heads Nook are both very small villages. They are close together and again are close to the heart of Carlisle. Faugh is tiny but very well connected being only 10 minutes from junction 43 on the M6. Heads Nook is just over a mile from Faugh and again despite its size does have good road connections. Both Heads Nook and Faugh have some pleasant accommodation options. There are few amenities in either of the villages but their proximity to both Brampton and Carlisle means that nothing is actually too far away. Brampton, being the larger of the three settlements is where amenities like schools and hospitals can be found as well as bigger shopping centres. So, for a lovely rural location with easy access to cities and their facilities, northern Cumbria is ideal.
