A motor that creates motion in a linear direction through direct induction is often defined as a linear motor. It offers electric traction in a linear manner rather than a rotary direction. Conventional motors are used when rotary motion is required to be generated.
This device has been in use for over six decades now and continues to be used in cutting edge operations in the modern industrial sector. For instance, conveyor belts that need to travel in a single line make use of linear motors. Similarly, electrically powered looms are also known to incorporate these devices to allow for linear motion. In the recent past, these motors have become better in that they provide highly programmable motion, repeatability and distances.
These motors comprise of a force, magnets, a magnetic track and windings. The rotor comprises internal components such as windings, a magnet tracks and magnets. The linear magnet tracks act as guide rails so that the forcer can move in a straight track.
The operation of these devices is also simple, as they comprise a linear encoder to help measure the position at the load for impeccable accuracy. Tubular linear motors are also referred to as an electric cylinder because of its cylindrical shape. In an electric cylinder, the stroke is more intense because of the replication of coils. However, one drawback here is that you cannot use them in applications that are susceptible to leakage of magnetic flux. These are often used in conjunction with a linear actuator that is used for controlled and programmable linear motion. The cylindrical motors are best used for applications that require small-distance movement.
