The most common cosmetic surgery performed in the world is liposuction. Liposuction is also known as lipoplasty. If you are planning to go under liposuction it will be interesting to know the procedure of the surgery.

The surgery is completed in two steps. The first step is anesthesia. The choice of anesthesia depends on the condition of the patient. There are two available options of liposuction include local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. It will be a good idea to discuss the method of anesthesia with your surgeon before the operation.

The second step is performing small incisions in the area of liposuction. A sterile liquid solution is infused through the incisions to prevent possible traumas and bleeding. A hollow metallic tube also known as cannula is inserted through the incisions to loosen the fat deposits beneath the skin. The loosened fat is suctioned with the help of a surgical vacuum attached to the cannula.

The recovery period depends on the volume of operation. Patient is advised to follow some special instructions in the post operative period to prevent possible complications of the surgery. You may not worry about the complications of the surgery if you are having stable weight and history of any serious illness is not present. In early post operative period treatment area is covered with elastic bandages to prevent swelling and edema. Sometimes liposuction is done in conjunction with tummy tuck, a cosmetic surgery procedure which is done to remove extra skin and fat from the abdominal area.
