Kirklevington, near Yarm, is a very small village within the County of Cleveland, Yorkshire. You could describe it as a hamlet in fact, surrounded by green fields, situated between Yarm railway station and the A19. A very quiet area of Yorkshire, Kirklevington (also known as Kirk Levington) is a civil parish in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, located not far from the town, Yarm. The town's population is approximately 1300. Until recently, Kirklevington was classed as part of North Yorkshire, but with boundary changes, it now lies in the County of Cleveland. The old Leeds Northern Railway line also runs through the village As its name suggests, with the use of the prefix "Kirk", the village's main highlight is that of its local church, which visitors can see on the approach to Kirklevington. The old chancel at St Martin's Church, said to have been built in the 13th century, still exists. Some stone has been found nearby, however from the 10th century and this was exhibited in a local Viking exhibition. The village hall is a memorial to those who sacrificed their life for King and country during the World Wars. Kirklevington Hall and Kirklevington Grange both survive on the outskirts of the village. Legend says that both buildings were connected by a tunnel underground, although this has yet to be proven. The Hall was an army base during the Second World War and prisoner of war camps were built, although never used. It was recently used as a hotel for Judges attending Teeside Crown Court until it was sold. Other historical buildings include the Old School, which dates from 1857 and is now used as a meeting place. It was built on the site of an earlier building, which was bequeathed to the village by William Hall in 1692, with its sale proceeds being distributed to the poor. A new school was built in 1973 and has children on roll from Kirklevington and Picton up to the age of eleven. Another of the newer, modern buildings, the village shop, has a travel agency within. The majority of the residents of Kirklevington work in Yarm and in other surrounding towns, with the remaining minority being employed by the local amenities such as the pub, the school, club, shop and farm. The working farms and a few of the cottages are the only survivors of an earlier hamlet; the majority of the buildings now erected within the town have been built in the past 30 years. Within the past few years, there has been an overwhelming change to industry in the local area. This has resulted in a more stable population, which has created a sense of community within Kirklevington. The village itself has been heavily refurbished and restored, with the new dwellings blending well with the historical, old buildings. It will take a few years for the new houses and their greenery to take root and soften the village's look, so that it retains some of its historical features to onlookers.
