Living In The Picturesque Ennerdale Region

Famed for its Lake District National Park, it is easy to see why England's second largest county, Cumbria, is such a popular tourist destination. Primarily rural, Cumbria has plenty of market towns and picturesque villages dotted throughout the countryside. Cumbria is also close to the Yorkshire Dales, the North Pennines and within easy reach of the Border Country between Scotland and England. The villages of Ennerdale and Cleator are both extremely picturesque and close to some areas of outstanding natural beauty. The village of Ennerdale is on a winding road from the town of Cleator Moor to Ennerdale Water. The village is made up of primarily more modern houses near the River Ehen. Ennerdale Water is the furthest west of the lakes in the Lake District and the only one of the lakes that has no direct road views. This makes Ennerdale Water more remote than some of the other lakes meaning it is less crowded even during to the peak season. The village and surrounding area is primarily agricultural though in its distant past both iron and haematite were mined in the valley. Ennerdale also had a thriving weaving industry. Nowadays, like most villages in the Lake District, tourism is the major industry and the village is where many people start their visit to Ennerdale Water. The village is also close to the West Cumbria Cyclepath and Wainwrights coast-to-coast walk. Ennerdale village has two pubs and a small village shop so is a popular stopping point whilst walking or cycling in the area. The nearby village of Cleator, only a mile from the town of Cleator Moor is also a lovely place to visit. Iron ore mining was prevalent in the area from the 12th century and became particularly commercialised during the industrial revolution when iron works were built in the 1840s. Cleator once had an important rail connection, which ran from Whitehaven through to Sellafield and Distington. The rail lines now make up part of the Coast to Coast cycle path. Cleator, thanks to its closeness to the bigger town of Cleater Moor, has more amenities than Ennerdale with several shops, pubs and accommodation choices. Ennerdale is much more limited, however both the villages are close to each other and to the town of Whitehaven which offer all the amenities of a sizeable market town. Whitehaven is also the start of the Coast to Coast cyclepath with runs through both Cleator and Ennerdale and is a hugely popular tourist attraction. The path itself runs on through to the East Coast and every year thousands of people cycle the whole route or part of the route every summer. Cleator Moor has many of the amenities such as schools and hospitals for the surrounding area, though the newly built West Lakes Academy located in Egremont is available for secondary age students. Ennerdale and Kinnislade Primary School in Cleator is also an option for children in the Ennersdale area. Cleator and Ennerdale offer the chance of being in a lovely location with access to some of the county's most amazing countryside but within easy access to nearby towns with all the amenities and transport connections.
