Living In The Small Hamlet Of Duddon Bridge
Duddon Bridge is a small hamlet close to and often incorporated within, the larger town of Millom. It is situated in Cumbria, on the eponymous River Duddon. Duddon Bridge is very small and offers delightful accommodation but little in the way of services. For a greater range of amenities, it is necessary to travel the very short distance to Millom, which is a mere 6 miles away by road. Millom offers excellent transport links by way of a train station that sits on the Cumbrian Coast Line, running regular services northbound to Sellafield and Carlisle and southbound to Barrow-in-Furness. The A595 also connects with Millom providing decent road links throughout Cumbria and the UK. The River Duddon, over which Duddon Bridge is located, joins the Irish Sea at Duddon Sands – an estuary between Morecambe and the west Cumbrian coast and where Millom is one of the major nearby settlements. The history of Millom dates back to a royal charter granted to the town in 1251 by King Henry III; this then allowed for the establishment of a market in the town and a castle was built there soon after. As with many towns in the region, Millom really began to grow and flourish with the Industrial Revolution and it developed around the building of the railway station as terraced housing, schools, banks and a library all established themselves in the area. There was much mining industry near to Millom as well as brick and tile works and Duddon Bridge is home to one of the most impressive surviving iron furnaces from the period. There were many reports of bad conditions in the mines and strife faced by the residents but they faced it with remarkable good-humoured fortitude, a characteristic still present in the people of Millom to this day. In addition, the River Duddon was a location favoured by the poet William Wordsworth and he wrote many sonnets and verses about this area that he loved and knew from his childhood. There is plenty to see and do in Millom, both for visitors and residents and the area's economy is now based partly on tourism. First and foremost, the landscape of this region is stunning as it stands on the periphery of the Lake District with all the natural beauty that has come to be synonymous with that area. There are even two specially-designated nature reserves nearby, both on the River Duddon. There is also rich industrial heritage in the area, from mines and restored ironworks to a Museum and Visitor Centre located in Millom railway station. In terms of evening activities, Millom provides several pubs, restaurants and a nightclub, as well as the Millom Palladium – a theatre, bar and multi-purpose entertainment venue. The town's school also provides a sports centre and swimming pool. Overall, Duddon Bridge has plenty to offer thanks to its proximate position to Millom which has a wide range of activities suitable for people of all ages and tastes and comes with the additional benefit of exemplary transport links throughout the region, the Lake District and beyond.
