Many companies are dissatisfied with the current systems they are using. Many NVOCC and Freight Forwarding software is AS-400 based. While this is certainly a superior alternative to paper and courier, there are some major issues with the older technology. Freight management software needs to provide as much information as possible in an intuitive, useable interface. The Problem With AS-400 It seems that the biggest contention point with AS-400 based systems is that the interface is difficult to use. The 'green screens' start to look the same, and navigation among the levels is cumbersome. A related issue to that is there are too many screens needed in order to complete a shipment—users have to navigate to separate screens for Customs clearance, charges due, and to see whether or not a vessel or flight has arrived with their customer's cargo. Because of this awkward navigation system, there is often a wider margin of error when it comes to data interpretation, such as when reading a Customs hold/clearance screen. An additional complaint that is commonly seen with the AS-400 system are data transfer problems. This is once again tied into the issues with the user interface. Users try to make a macro from the system to a spreadsheet in order to more clearly see what is needed in order to release a shipment for delivery, and the data won't transfer completely, or transfers inaccurately. The Ideal Logistics Solution Stepping up to a GUI (Graphical User Interface) system makes it easier to navigate. There are fewer screens to encounter per shipment, making reading what's needed for clearance much more straightforward. There is little need for data transfer to spreadsheets because of its superior organization, and when there is need for data transfer, it is more simply accomplished. Additionally, there is better customizing to suit each individual business, because the ideal solution has several available programs that are already tailored to different kinds of applications. The latest technology offers programs specifically for freight forwarding, logistics, warehouse management, transportation, purchase orders, accounting, and related supply-chain solutions. Most importantly, not just any software will do the job. The best in the business use programs that are dedicated specifically to the logistics and freight management industry. Moving Forward with Technology Investing in new, easy-to-use technology to manage cargo inventory, export & import documentation, domestic freight, international freight, and other logistics applications is a worthwhile endeavor. The initial investment pays for itself in saved operating costs, reports, and the like. Most companies see a quick upturn in customer satisfaction, repeat business/customer loyalty, and smoother delivery of freight—especially when compared to the use of their older systems.
