One of the most important parts of our everyday living is looking and feeling our best. We spend a lot of time and money in search of the magic solution and we are promised amazing results, but at what price?
Educating the Public About Toxic Beauty Products
It’s important that we raise awareness and educate the general public about potentially harmful ingredients in beauty products and our daily personal care products. Many are unaware that the cosmetics they are applying to their face and body contain protentially harmful ingredients. Consumers can be exposed to several toxins in "beauty" and "health" products through skin absorbtion, inhalation, and ingestion. We think that because we pay a higher price our cosmetics are safe. When in fact too many are linked to cancer, reproductive harm and other health risks.
Personal Care Product Use Survey
A personal care product use survey of more than 2,300 people, conducted by EWG and a coalition of public interest and environmental health organizations, shows that the average adult uses 9 personal care products each day, with 126 unique chemical ingredients. Consumers can be fooled into buying products that don't deliver what they sell. Chemical ingredients which our body doesn’t need or respond to very well!
In response to this organizations for Safe cosmetics are being formed. Their voices along with yours are being heard. Eco-friendly skin care products are being developed, as well as beauty aids and make-up. We as the consumer must continue to educate ourselves and those around us. Have you heard of the dirty dozen? Here are the 12, and there is more study and research finding more.
The Dirty Dozen In Cosmetics
Propylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene Glycol: Found in Anti-freeze. Acts as a "surfactant (wetting agent and solvent). Penetrates skin and weakens protein and cellular structure.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Detergents that pose serious health threats. Used in garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers.
DEA (diethanolamine). MEA (Monoethanolaniine) & TEA (triethanolamine): Hormone-disrupting chemicals that can form cancer-causing nitrates.
Sodium Hydroxide: The most recent addition to our personal care products. This is a poison (caustic lye) found in drain cleaners, yet is now found in our children and adult toothpaste!
Triclosan: Synthetic "antibacterial" with a chemical structure similar to Agent Orange! The EPA registers it as a pesticide.
DMDM & Urea (Imidazolidinyl): Two of many preservatives that often release formaldehyde which cause joint pain, skin reactions, allergies, depression, headaches. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): Carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that reduces the skin's natural moisture. Liutane or Propane: Found in aerosol products. May be narcotic and cause asphyxiation,
Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40): Drying, irritating solvent that strips skin's moisture and immune barrier, making you vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. Made from a petroleum derivative found in shellac and antifreeze as well as personal care products.
Mineral Oil: Petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic wrap, clogging the pores. Interferes with skin's ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging. Baby oil is 100% mineral oil!
FD&C Color Pigments: Synthetic colors from coal tar that deposits toxins onto the skin. Animal studies have shown almost all of them to be carcinogenic.
Fragrances: Can contain up to four thousand ingredients (including animal urine), many toxic or carcinogenic.

Many in this list are linked to cancer due to their suspicion of the toxicity. Many European Unions have been banned from their market but reformulate and sell to the US Markets! We need to use this list to purchases safer, healthier products.
