If you put yourself on a very-low-calorie diet your probably not going to lose weight. If you drop a large amount of calories from your diet, your resting metabolic rate will automatically slow down, because your body now assumes you are starving. Depending on your level of activity or exercise, you should look to losing anywhere from half a pound to two pounds a week.
The biggest mistake people make when trying to lose weight is to start out by starving themselves instead of a logical plan of steady weight loss. Metabolism actually slows down when you take on this kind of approach. Metabolism is the very thing you need to research if your serious about losing weight. You can find many educational books at your public library to do just that. Now lets look at some things that can help you speed up your metabolism.
I don't know where the idea of skipping breakfast became part of a diet, this is exactly the kind of nonsense that causes a diet to fail! Your metabolism slows while you sleep, and it doesn't rev back up until you eat again. In saying this, if you don't eat breakfast, your body won't burn as many calories until lunchtime as it could have. So start your day off with a hardy breakfast and jump start your metabolism. Remember high-fiber foods are always good when cutting calories.
Increase the amount of protein intake. Research has shown that plenty of protein can boost your metabolism, causing you to burn extra calories. This doesn't mean you have to live on a high protein diet but shoot for 350 to 600 calories daily to come from lean protein sources. Try these for starters, fish, chicken, low-fat cheese, yogurt, a small can of tuna and how about some type of nuts for a high protein snack. Protein is harder for the body to break down, so you burn more calories getting rid of them.
Load up on low-fat dairy products. There is a study that proved calcium, along with other substances in dairy, actually revs up your metabolism, telling your body to burn excess fat faster. Dairy products reap more benefits instead of other calcium-rich foods (like broccoli), calcium-fortified products (such as orange juice) or supplements. Milk truly does the body good!
Exercise is still the number one thing you can implement in your lifestyle. When you increase your muscle to fat ratio, automatically your metabolism speeds up. As I always say, longterm lifestyle change is a must to lose weight and keep it off! You don't have to go out and join a high priced gym or club, to begin add a walking routine that you can continue or simply move around more often (stay busy). As always, wishing you the best in speeding up your metabolism!
