Louisiana is often one of the states holding large amounts of unclaimed property that goes unrecognized. The law related to unclaimed property in Louisiana was passed in the year 1972, which was revised again in the year 1981. As per this law, people who have lost their property in any part of the state can claim the same at any point of time. These unclaimed property holders need not worry about the safety of the property as it is the responsibility of the state to safeguard the property by taking the ownership from the financial institutions.
According to this law, the property is said to be abandoned if there are no whereabouts of the property owner for a specified period of time and the financial agency is also not able to locate the owner. The Louisiana unclaimed property lies within the custody of the state until the state is able to locate the real owner or the owner himself claims it back in the rightful manner.
After the passing of this law, more than an estimated amount of $250 million has been passed on to the state unclaimed property department of Louisiana. The state agencies boast of a rightful return of more than $65 million to the owners. It is because of the state initiatives that have yielded better results compared to the outdated techniques of sending notices on the last known address of the owner. State agencies believe that by educating the people of the state about the importance of lost money on the personal finances, they can actually encourage people in claiming back their lost money. The Louisiana state government is using media as its main weapon when it comes to educating masses at the same time about the concept of lost money.
Every year, millions of dollars are added to the treasury. Unclaimed Money occurs because most of the owners change their area of residence without addressing the bank authorities on a prior basis. Other than possible change in address, there are various other reasons for a property to be termed as unclaimed. These reasons include bankrupt businesses, relocation of office, sudden death, marriage breakups, etc.
Almost all the states are now maintaining their own database that consists of all the important information related to lost property lying within the state. All the user has to do is provide personal details, like name, in different combinations, to get better search results. The official site of NAUPA or the state treasury offers information to the user about the correct procedure of claiming a property back and the user can even download the application form from the website.
The website of www.irs.gov is the best tool to search information about lost tax refunds. All the claimant has to do is go to “where’s my refund” section and start the search by entering personal details, like name or social security number. The state agencies have even set up state fairs in different regions to educate people about the concept and importance of lost money. These fairs also serve the people on a walk–in basis and assist them in making on the spot claims on their lost property.
