When we are faced with personal and/or professional challenges, it can be difficult not to jump to the “what if’s” of the future or relive the “should have’s” of the past.
When you focus on being here and now, you are living by the invitation of what each moment has to offer.
Some people feel being present is passive and that they won’t accomplish anything. They think they will lose the desire to act upon things, or make critical decisions, or not know what choice to make, etc.
When you’re inner spotlight is on the current moment you are making room for your insights to shine brighter than you ever thought imaginable.
Being in this space allows you to respond rather than react to situations. It offers you possibilities and opportunities that may have gone unnoticed because you were wrapped up in your thoughts instead of allowing them to be unwrapped.
You might surprise yourself by finding that by focusing on as many moments as possible that you are more productive because you are giving your full awareness to the task at hand.
Your ability to make key decisions or choices will be from a centered space rather than a quick or rushed one.
When you are here and now, then you are living life rather than life living you.
In the movie “The Way of the Peaceful Warrior” starring Nick Nolte, there is a brilliant dialogue of questions that occurs betwee
Nolte and a superficial student he was helping to see his purpose, and it goes something like this:
Nolte: "Where are you?"
Student: "Right here."
Nolte: "What time is it?"
Student: "Now."
Nolte: "What matters most?"
Student: "This moment."
Ask yourself these questions as often as possible. They will remind you there really isn’t anything more valuable than the moment at hand because it’s the only one there is.
Does that mean family, work, events, or things don’t matter to them? Of course not; what it does mean is they recognize the importance of the moment to all of life’s blessings.
When you are here and now, you aren’t stressed or anxious about the future or stuck in feelings of anger, shame, guilt, or regrets of the past. Instead, you are at peace, centered, and empowered by the connection to this very moment.
When you are present there’s a sense of serenity that expands your oneness with life instead of the feeling of separation.
It nurtures and replenishes your soul. It allows you to listen instead of speak, whether out loud or in your head.
You have the option to choose awareness, clarity, compassion, courage, creativity, flexibility, fulfillment, grace, gratitude, growth, happiness, healing, hope, imagination, inspiration, laughter, love, patience, peace, understanding and wholeness in any given moment.
You might amaze yourself by discovering the more wondrous moments you invite in, the more you enjoy and reap the benefits.
So how do you go about remembering to live in the here and now as often as possible?
You could write down the questions above and put them somewhere you could see them, or jot down any key word that reminds you to breathe in the present moment. You could pause when you hear the phone ring or when you get in or out of the car. You could have a chime go off or before going to bed or rising in the morning you could set your intention that you will become still for as many moments as you can.
There are 1440 minutes in a day; that’s a lot of minutes! Just think of all the moments you could breathe in peace and clarity.
Don’t worry if you miss one as there will be one thousand, three hundred and thirty-nine more for you to consider.
Remember, it’s not about the quantity of moments, it’s the quality of them. So, enjoy as many as you can.
