Being a Licensed Practical Nurse is definitely something to pride yourself on. I, too, was an LPN at one point in my career journey. It’s an admirable professional career that can be obtained in a year of intense education. LPN education takes less time and is less expensive than an RN education. The training occurs through a vocational or technical school or community or junior college. Generally speaking, the prospect of getting a job once certified is good. This license allowed me to care for people who were sick, injured or disabled. I was able to work directly under a physician or RN. My LPN experience was diverse. I measured a patients’ vital signs, recorded them. Prepared and gave injections, I could dress wounds and later in my LPN career I was able to supervise nursing assistants and aides. In addition, I found great fulfillment in keeping patients comfortable by bathing, dressing, providing personal hygiene, moving them and assisting them to stand or walk. Some days I would help a patient feed themselves and for a small period of time I even helped deliver, care for and feed infants. As an LPN I was able to be a generalist and worked in all areas of healthcare. But as I became more familiar with the specialties I found intriguing, challenging and fulfilling I decided it was time to step things up a notch. I also knew becoming an RN would bring broader career opportunities http://www.prnhealthservices.com/job-search.php. So the big question – how in the world do I go from an LPN to an RN when working full-time and running a family. Fortunately with a bit of research I found an LPN-to-RN training program. I’m not sure what availability there is in your region for this type of advancement in education, but allow me to tell you what I found and how I successfully completed the training and became an RN. Online! Online! Online! I know online education isn’t’ for everyone, but it provided me the flexibility I needed. I was a working LPN who earned a bachelor of Science in Nursing degree – working at my own pace and without disrupting my additional life commitments. The interesting part was that a campus based program could have taken up to 4 years to complete, by using the online resources available I was studying for my National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) within 2 years and was working soon after. It took great discipline, but my career has evolved and excelled as a result. The commitment, drive and dedication were worth it. I was an LPN. I am an RN.
