Holiday travel guide to Macedonia, The ancient name for small but very beautiful country located in the heart of Balkan’s Peninsula. There are several uplands and in this story we will speak for Macedonia as hot Holiday Travel destination for winter holidays. Usually it has been noticed that the winter in Macedonia is cold and wet. To enjoy the scenic snowfall in Macedonia you should visit the country in the period between November and April. Macedonia is continual country with no sea coast but easy accessible by the air or land. Two airports in Skopje and Ohrid have mainly good connections with all European hubs, and very good highways connection to the north with Serbia and to the south with Greece. Mainly visa is not needed for most of the countries worldwide. Winter in Macedonia has different faces depending where you are, mountains or valleys, from extremely snowy landscape to the green forest. Good for winter tourism in Macedonia are mountains located in western and central part of the country.rnLess than 100 km from Skopje you can find a natural oasis virtually untouched by man. Spreading over an area of about 300 square miles “Mavrovo” is most known located at “Bistra Mountain”. Not only do these mountains provide magnificent visual landscapes, they also prove to be the best skiing terrains on the Balkans. Mavrovo’s impressive forests contain more than 100 rare species of trees. Good prepared skiing terrains with all needed winter facilities, are almost on the beach of Mavrovo’s Lake. Modern hotels, hostels, cottages, room to let are easy to find. In the peak season booking in advance by the web or directly in hotels is most recommended. Being on the beach of the lake and skiing in the same time is possible only here. Skiing equipment, you might have your own or it’s easy to hire for very convenient prices. Another good skiing resort is “Popova Sapka”. It’s located on the “Sara Mountain” at 1800 meters latitude and it is very close to the Albanian’s border.rnThe legend says an orthodox priest exerting the evangelical mission, was killed like a martyr (and the body remained to be torn asunder by the wild animals), while visiting the orthodox-Macedonian homes through the villages. At this district, where only the priest’s hat was found – was named in his honor, “Popova Sapka” (English – Priest’s Hat). Today in Macedonia “Popova Sapka” is modern ski resort with all needed winter facilities. You will need les then hour driving from Skopje, it is 35km distance only. “Popova Sapka” has been host of European and Balkan Ski Championships. This ski resort has length of 10 km in ski slopes. Resort have skiing capacity of almost 8,000 skiers per hour. The snow at “Popova Sapka” lasts for 135 days, on average. Nearby the resort are many small glacial lakes scattered around on the mountain. Every year, on February 15th-16th is a skiing event so called “Sar Cup”. For ordinary visitors there are many ski-schools, ski-services and the hire of ski-equipment. This winter resort offers excellent ski environment and hotel accommodations. Hotels, cottages, rooms to let are easy to find but web booking in advance or direct hotel dialing is always the best option. Above two skiing resorts are most famous. Of course that here are many others which will be mentioned in some another story. We recommend - don’t miss to discover Macedonia during winter time.
