Those were the times of war and initially a fort was established in this city which was named as Alcazar. The location of the fort was chosen near the stream. The name of the city was derived from that as Madrid is an Arabic word for stream or source of water. Madrid was captured by Christians in 1085. Madrid remained a small town till the sixteenth century. It was Philip II who firstly made Madrid his capital in 1561. The town converted into a city afterwards and its population started growing very fast. Madrid remained an important city of the world since that time. Royal Palace was built in 1764 at the place of Moorish Fort which was destroyed in the same century. There are lots of influences of various eras of Spain on the city today.
