An art easel is described as an upright support for the production of artistic pieces. It enables the user to rest a canvas or drawing surface upon it in order to complete a set piece of work whilst observing his or her subject. They are also designed to fit within small working spaces or studios and are generally collapsible for easy storage. The development of the art easel for painting and illustrating was developed mostly through the renaissance era and completely changed and revolutionized the way an artist worked. Though the easel is a simple invention it is often thought of as ingenious as it truly has changed the art world. Even the earliest of tapestries were thought to have been made on a primitive easel prototype. There are various different types of easel, but they generally fall into one of five categories. These are the table easel, the tripod easel, the A-Frame easel, the H-Frame easel and the Box easel. Each type provides a different kind of support for the artist and each comes in a different size to suit the needs of the artist. The Table Easel was designed to be used upon a flat surface or table as its name suggests. They have the great advantage of creating a workspace in just about any area, and although small they are generally fully adjustable. Tripod design Easels take their name obviously from their design, they stand on three legs and tend to be taller in size. There are many different types of tripod easel but generally the design tends to include a crossbar across the easel to provide extra stability. The A-Frame Easel is known for its excellent support and has the added advantage of being able to support large canvases. They are widely used in studios with a large working area. Unfortunately the A-Frame tends to be the bulkiest of easels and is not generally portable. The H-Frame Easel is all based upon right angels. They are generally very rectangular and parallel with regards to the support posts. These easels usually have an adjustable height bar as they are normally made for larger piece of work. A Box Easel is generally seen to be a travel easel. It usually would have a compartment for all of the artists working materials and a carry handle for portability. They often have telescopic legs also, adjustable for field work. When selecting an easel you need to take into account the reason for which you are buying one. Some artists are simply not comfortable using a large easel, if using one at all. However some artists cannot live without their easel. Whichever one you choose, first research which one will best serve your purpose.
