Asian eyelid surgery or double eyelid surgery is very simple. There are many ways to conduct a double eyelid surgery in Asians. This can be done with a full-incision, partial incision and without any incision. Each method has its own benefits and follows its own procedures. Surgeons choose one of these three methods depending on a patient’s need and health conditions. Procedure: This procedure is quite simple. A small amount of skin is removed from the under-skin tissues as well as fat pads under the eyes which is a bit similar to traditional eyelid surgery techniques. It is essential for an operating surgeon to have an in-depth knowledge on where and how to make incisions and how to remove the fat. They also need to have the knowledge of how much fat should be removed and where the crease needs to be drawn. Before going for this surgery there are a few measures one should follow such as to cut down alcohol consumption and stop taking Vitamin E. Since Ginseng and Biloba (essential element) cause prolonged bleeding, these two must be avoided along with aspirin or other medications that contains them. One must make all necessary arrangements at home, such as lining up someone to take you home and making other arrangements (washed clothes, ice cubes, gauze pads, acetaminophine etc). There are few general post surgery measures one must keep in mind to ensure that things go smooth, such as washing hair with shampoo and taking shower before this surgery, avoid washing the eyes, applying cosmetics, and wearing loose and comfortable clothes after the surgery. A blepharoplasty operation usually takes 1–3 hours. Post-operatively, the initial swelling and bruising consequent to the surgery will subside and resolve within 1–2 weeks. The final results of the blepharoplastic correction will become apparent after several months. The results of a blepharoplasty procedure are appreciated by comparing pre- and post-operative (before-and-after) photographs of the eye region of a patient. Laser blepharoplasty is performed for eyelid surgery using a laser instead of a scalpel. Laser blepharoplasty is often combined with laser eyelid rejuvenation, as both the procedures can be performed in conjunction. Cost: Cost is one of the important aspects when considering this surgery. It may be varying upon the types and techniques used in the surgery. Lower eyelid surgery costs an average of about $2,400 while the price of upper surgery costs an average of $2,100. Laser surgery is somewhat expensive and costs around $3,000 to $5,000. Risks after the Surgery Every surgery is a risky procedure. This one is no exception in this regard. The potential risks involved in this surgery are as follows: 1. Hematoma is severe as it involves an accumulation of blood beneath the skin. 2. Retinal detachment which is caused from holes or even tears found in the retina and requires additional surgery to fix. 3. Ectropian – Drooping effect takes place and causes inverting of the lower lid. This also needs additional surgery to repair. There are few risks which are not much serious but can include the following: 1. Whiteheads develop after removal of sutures. 2. Swelling occurs at the eyelid corners. 3. Some may experience difficulty in keeping their eyes closed. 4. Development of scars, infection, tears and dryness are few risks worth considering and 5. The use of anesthetics may result in inverse reaction. CONCLUSION: Eyelid surgery is mostly recommended for Asians. This technique is simple. However, conducting this method needs great expertise and knowledge. Thus before going for the surgery one must consult a specialist surgeon and follow pre and post operative procedures.
