No. 6: Make Your Soul Dance Again

“Explore those things that make you exude joy. Is it singing? Rollerblading? Gardening? Writing? Painting? Carve out moments in your week for these little treats that nourish your soul. Most importantly, seek careers and businesses that allow you to weave in your talents, passions, and profits together as one.”

My soul is dancing every morning when I wake up! It feels so good to do what you love. When I’m not working for myself full-time coaching, writing, speaking, training; I’m not living my passion and definitely not a happy camper.

Even if you aren’t running your own business or not in your dream job, there are still moments of your life where you can focus on your dreams and your creativity. It is during these priceless moments that you can nourish yourself and really do what makes you feel fulfilled. Use these moments to help balance out those not so nice moments when you feel chained to a desk or stuck running 5 million errands.

When you push away the moments of bliss that life gives you and instead put everything and everyone else first … guess what? You, too, won’t be a happy camper. Sometimes, you might not even know why you are feeling a bit of out of sorts, uneasy, or just plain grumpy. It’s your inner being that is shouting at you … “I WANNA PLAY! I WANNA DO WHAT I LOVE, DARN IT!” But … you keep ignoring it, perhaps not realizing just how much you might need a bit of fun to lift your spirits. Keep in mind, your playing could be traveling, writing, singing, going to art galleries, reading, planning events, cooking, baking pies … some of the simplest of pleasures in life can feed our souls.

When you keep pushing up the stream, you’ll get more pain. When you keep pushing and fighting, because life should be hard; you’ll be in agony each day you do the opposite of what you love. I bet there are many gifts and talents you are not utilizing, because it’s soooo easy for you. It’s time to release the oars and flow in the direction toward what you truly desire. And once you realize it’s easy, you’ll begin to understand that it’s supposed to be. DON’T FIGHT THE FLOW. It’s YOUR CALLING!

I’ve been coaching a client in my CIRCLE OF POWER who works at a very prominent bank. Vicky has all the right education, connections, and degrees. She makes a great salary, but she is down-right miserable. She’s stuck in a career that really isn’t what she wants to do. Her underlying boredom is another clue that Vicky needs more creativity and fun.

What she really loves to do is hair. She’s always been the stylist for her friends and family. Through our coaching sessions, Vicky started to get clear on her personal goals and realized it was time to please herself and not everyone else. She took night and weekend classes at a cosmetology school and obtained her license. She made many sacrifices and, for awhile, had to give up some dates and hanging out with friends so she could embody her passion as a hair stylist.

A year later, she is working a few nights a week and weekends doing hair at an upscale salon. Even though it’s a lot of hours, it’s easy for her. It’s her passion. She’s creative, friendly, stylish, and a fabulous conversationalist. She’s a natural! The beauty of it is that she already has the business and financial know-how from her 9-5 at the bank. Now she’s ready to take the next step in her transition plan — to start her own salon, on a small scale first, like a kiosk or store front and then move to a bigger location.

The key is, even though she is still at the boring bank job, it’s paying the bills and helping her fulfill her real dream. She has a plan and she’s moving on it. She is FOCUSED! When you have drive, vision, and a willingness to make your soul dance — it’s GOING TO WORK! You will find a way! Just don’t forget to create a system of support, because it’s rough when you try to do it alone.

1. What’s missing from your life that could send you soaring?
2. Rate your creativity on a scale of 1-5. (1 – I do nothing creative, 5 – I am extremely creative).
3. List your top 5 passions.
4. What can you do to make room for fun?
5. What excuse just came up for you?
6. What is your solution?
7. What’s your plan of action for the next 90 days to make room?
8. Who can you ask to hold you accountable? A friend, a spouse, a coach?

I urge you to find out what you love, but don’t react crazy and run into your boss’ office and quit either. LOL … You laugh? Unfortunately, people do it all the time! I’ve seen folks do it and they have no back-up plan. That’s when they can get into trouble, personally and professionally. I believe on stepping out on faith ONLY when you have a plan and proof that it’s already working for you.

If you start exploring now what you like to do, when it’s time for your next move, you’ll already be in motion and not starting from scratch.

Now granted, everyone reading this might not want to be an entrepreneur and that’s okay, (Even though I secretly wished everyone would just try it. LOL) However, no matter what age or what stage you are in your life, I urge you to make time to do things you love. I don’t care if it’s painting, bike riding, gardening, sitting by a pond and watching ducks float by. It’s crucial to make time for you, make time for your passion, and most importantly, allow your soul to experience the giddiness, joy, and excitement of a little child at play. Now, when you can combine that FEELING with your career — that, my friends, is TRUE SUCCESS!
