Anyone wondering where to go on holiday in Eastern Europe would do well to consider the city of Budapest Hungary, especially if they are looking to keep costs down. Budapest is not just a good destination because of the price. There are many more important reasons to go to Hungary. On a historical level, two cities were joined to create the modern day Budapest we know. The cities of Buda and Pest were combined in 1873, so for most of their history they have been totally separate. You still really get that feeling today when you can quite openly see the differences. The majority of historical sights are situated in Buda. The lush green spaces and alleys are instantly recognisable. Gelert Hill is the place to head to if you want the finest view of the surrounding area. Dont forget to visit The Fishermans Bastion if you want to catch a panoramic view of the Parliment Building. rnAt the other side of the Danube (on the South bank) lies Pest, an area many would consider to be the more vibrant and modern side of the Hungarian capital. You will find many amazing bars and restaurants on this side of the city as well as a lot of the accommodation. Dont mistake Pest for having a lack of history, as the parliament building is situated here. If you ever get the chance to see a classical concert in the basilica, take it. The acoustics are amazing. rnThere is so much to see and do in Budapest that you really are spoiled for choice. The capital has a host of world heritage sites and has accolades announcing it as one of the most beautiful cities in the EU. With its relaxed vibe it is also considered to be one of the most liveable cities in the world. rnIf you had to pinpoint a specific thing Budapest is famous for, it would be a struggle. When it comes to the crunch though you would have to say the thermal baths; they are hugely popular among locals and international visitors alike. For the best journeys around Budapest, pick up a bicycle. Despite the Hilly areas around the castle of Buda, the city is very open to cycling and its a great way of getting around. Its a doddle to get to all the areas of interest via bicycle lanes. If you use the park land in Heroes Square, you can get to the thermal baths easily and quickly. You should also check out the metro at least once on your visit. It is steeped in history and is home to the oldest line in the world, the M1. You dont have to be a train spotter to enjoy the experience.
