For some time now the idea of a seventy-two hour kit has been around. You usually hear about this particular subject in regards to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the LDS church, or in relation to emergency preparedness or food storage.
Creating seventy-two hour kit could mean the difference between life and death in some situations, but more often than not, it is the difference between living comfortably and struggling in times of distress. Therefore, no matter whom you are or what you believe in, making a seventy-two hour kit is a good idea.
There are many different elements to building a seventy-two hour kit, all of which are very vital to creating an effective kit. For the most part, many of these things are just the essentials.
Of course, first and foremost you will want to have food and water, a three day supply of food and water. Many of the types of food you will want to include in your kit are fairly reminiscent to food storage or emergency food.
Try packing some protein or granola bars, trail mix or dried fruit, crackers or cereal, canned products such as tuna or beans or some other canned meat or vegetable, and some canned juice. You may also want candy or gum, and one gallon or four liters of water per person.
You may also consider in addition to emergency food, some bedding and clothing. Pack a change of clothing, undergarments, a rain coat or poncho, blankets and emergency heat blankets, a cloth sheet, and a plastic sheet.
For your fuel and light, there are several things you might consider packing. Things like battery lighting, extra batteries, flares, candles, and a lighter.
Personal supplies and medication are also very important. A First Aid kit and supplies, toiletries, cleaning supplies, make sure your immunizations are up to date, medication, and prescription medication.
Along with all those things there are other important things that you might consider bringing like important documents and money. Things such as genealogy records, legal documents, vaccination papers, insurance policies, cash, credit card, and pre-paid phone cards.
Some people might even favor bringing some scriptures, like a Bible and other significant documents. A lot of that may depend on you.
As a side note along with all this emergency food and other supplies, you may want something to put them in such as a duffel bag or back pack that you can lift and carry. Also take care that if you have an infant, to plan for that.
Seventy-two hour kits may seem a little excessive but you may be surprise as to how important they may become in times of need or disaster. It is times like those you will look back and be glad you planned ahead.
