Diabetes is a chronic condition affecting millions of people around the globe. It is a metabolism disorder that severely degrades body’s ability to regulate the glucose level in blood. Metabolism is a process by which our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. The digested food enters our bloodstream in the form of glucose and carried to the cells, which use it for producing energy. Glucose cannot enter the cells without presence of insulin, a substance produced by our pancreas. When one suffers from diabetes, his or her pancreas does not produce insulin required for delivery of glucose the cells. Although diabetes is not curable, it can be managed. Diabetes patients need treatment, often a couple of tablets or an injection, whenever their blood glucose level is higher than a specified safe limit. A glucometer, or glucose meter is a very useful check-up instrument to help you manage your blood glucose level. What does glucometer do for you? A glucose meter performs glucose blood test that tells you the level of glucose in your blood. By this, you can assess whether you need to take the diabetes medicine or not. Modern glucose meters are very compact and analyse blood glucose level in a matter of seconds. This is by virtue of modern technology that has increased the speed of testing and the level of precision of the results. The compact size allows this instrument not only to be kept at home but also to be carried with you when you are travelling. How does it work? The blood glucose test is very simple. You just need to pierce the tip of your finger with a fine needle, often supplied with the meter, to get a drop of blood, which is then collected on a disposable strip. The strip is then inserted in the meter, which reads and calculates the glucose level. Most of the glucometers are designed to read the level in milligrams per liter. How does it help in treatment of diabetes? The diabetes treatment often comprises of one or two tablets, or an insulin injection which has to be administered when your blood glucose level is high. The dosage is also adjusted according to the level. So, if you are diabetic and administer the diabetes medicine without knowing the blood sugar level, this may, in turn, result into hypoglycaemia, a condition in which the level of glucose in your blood goes to extremely low level. Hypoglycaemia is a dangerous condition and requires immediate attention. It cannot be diagnosed without any blood glucose testing instrument as its symptoms often get confused with those of high glucose level. It is, therefore, very important to know your blood sugar level before taking diabetes medicine. Thus, your personal glucometer allows you to manage your diabetes without the risk of suffering from hypoglycaemia. Besides, by performing glucose blood test regularly, you develop a habit of monitoring your diabetes, which is very critical in proper management of this disorder. You can purchase a glucometer from any drug store in you vicinity. The packs usually contain batteries, fine needles and a good number of test strips.
