It's not always easy to market yourself as a defense lawyer or to get the word out there about the services that your firm can offer; people tend to be a little suspect of firms who advertise in traditional media channels (TV, bus and subway ads for personal injury firms, anyone?), though it's important to be able to get the attention of potential clients and bring in new business from people who genuinely need legal services. The challenge is to promote your practice in a way which lets people know that you and your firm are reputable, honest and sincerely dedicated to their clients' best interests.

If you could use a few ideas on marketing yourself or your firm's services, read on for a few tips which could help you to raise your profile without damaging your reputation with consumers.
Use the Web:

Like any other kind of business (and a law firm is a business, like it or not), you need to be where the consumers are and increasingly that means the web. You probably have a website for your private practice or for your firm already, but you should take full advantage of the marketing possibilities of the internet by optimizing your site, exploring online advertising and leveraging the communications possibilities of social media and social networking platforms.
Networking:
It's important to keep in touch with others in your field; as well as outside of your field. Your social contacts could yield new clients, referrals and other sources of new business. You never know what might come up, so get out there and talk to people - it could mean bigger and better things for your practice or firm.
Take on Pro Bono Work:
Doing pro bono work is something you may do already (and if not, it's something you should be doing). Of course, pro bono work does not guarantee new business, but every time you get out there and take on a case on a pro bono basis, you'll meet more people and as a result, expand your social contacts just that much more. A high profile case can of course get more name recognition for your firm, so don't be shy about taking on these volunteer projects. You may also want to think about doing your pro bono work through a local legal aid group, since you're more likely to meet other legal professionals who may have leads on business for your firm.
Donations and Sponsorshipsr
Giving back to your community isn't as effective as advertising your services, but it can make a very real positive impact on the people who find out about your charitable work. You'll be generating goodwill in your community and doing the right thing - which even if you don't bring in a single new client as a result, is worth quite a bit in its own right.
There are a lot of different ways that a defense attorney can promote his or her services or their firm; the ideas here are only a few of the many marketing ideas there are to explore.
